Baseball:

If you hear the name Sebastian Lawrence, the first thought is his time as the Glendora High School quarterback.

On Friday, Lawrence made news on another field.

He tossed a one-hit shutout for the Tartans baseball program.

He issued two walks and registered four strikeouts in a 12-0 victory over Walnut to split the two-game Palomares League series with the Mustangs.

Lawrence needed 75 pitches to pull off a Van Halen and finish what he started.

And 48 of the 75 pitches were strikes.

Matt Gutierrez’s pinch-hit single to lead off the top of the seventh was the only thing that stood between Lawrence and a no-hitter.

Leading 2-0, Glendora scored 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

JJ Rodriguez got the loss after allowing two runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings.

Rodriguez walked two and fanned a pair of Tartans.

GHS got to Kai Sunabe for seven runs on three hits, three walks and a hit batter over 2/3 of an inning.

To make his day even more special, Lawrence went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles, two runs and two RBIs.

John Seader walked, singled, doubled, scored and drove in a pair of runs.

Riley Cooper went 2-for-3 with a walk, run and two RBIs.

Johnny Jabbour singled and scored.

Diego (2-for-3, one run & one RBI) and Santiago (1-for-3, run & one RBI) Garza combined to go 3-for-6 with two walks, three runs and a pair of RBIs.

Aidan Yamazaki singled, scored three runs and drove in two.

Troy Norman went 1-for-2 with a walk, run and one RBI.

Up next: Glendora travels to Diamond Bar on Wednesday, April 15th.

Quotable:

GHS pitcher, Sebastian Lawrence: “My fastball was very effective and it gave me confidence. I also mixed in mainly a couple changeups when I didn’t throw my fastball. I felt like we were in a spot where a win was very important, because we were 0-3 in league games prior to yesterday’s game. We’re very confident about what’s ahead and we are all very focused on the task at hand and our next opponent, which is Diamond Bar. We are willing to do what it takes in order to be the best we can, and that starts with winning one game at a time, first with Diamond Bar.”
