Baseball:
Ayala did what Ayala does in Palomares League games.
For the third consecutive game, the Bulldogs surrendered a 1-0 lead.
And for the third straight league game, the Bulldogs had one big inning that proved fatal for an AHS opponent.
On Wednesday, Ayala scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and they went on to secure a 4-2 victory over their visitors from Bonita.
The Bulldogs out-hit the Bearcats, 8-4, and they improved to 3-0 in Palomares League games and 11-1 overall.
Easton Sarmiento went 5 1/3 innings and he was charged with an unearned run on four hits to earn the win.
He issued two walks and registered seven strikeouts.
Nolan Chuang got the final five outs, and he surrendered one run on one hit.
Chuang walked two and fanned four BHS batters.
Judah Reeve walked, singled and scored a pair of runs.
Gavin Lennig drew a pair of walks and singled.
Joaquin Mendez went 2-for-4, and his RBI single in the top of the first gave Bonita a 1-0 lead.
Brady Horn singled in a run in the seventh to pull the Bearcats to within 4-2.
But with the potential tying runs on base, Chuang got Andrew Lomeli swinging.
Joaquin Covarrubias went 3 2/3 innings for BHS, and he surrendered four runs on six hits.
Covarrubias issued two walks and registered six strikeouts.
Taylor Kapadia (1 2/3 IP) and Andrew Jeffers (2/3) combined to provide 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
In the bottom of the fourth, and trailing 1-0, Ivan Ruddell and Caleb Trugman singled, and Dylan Wood walked to load the bases with no outs.
Elijah Duarte tied the game at 1-1 on a sac fly.
Jonah Boyd singled in a run, and Jaden Valenzuela’s two-out, two-run single gave Ayala a 4-1 lead.
Jonah Boyd went 2-for-2 with a walk, run and one RBI.
Ruddell and Trugman singled and scored one run apiece.
Aiden Granados reached base on a fielder’s choice (bunt) and scored.
Elijah Duarte singled to go with his sac fly.
Eric Hernandez doubled and Jrue Hurd singled in the win.
With Diamond Bar’s 6-5 victory over Claremont, the Bulldogs take over sole possession of first place atop the Palomares League standings.
