Baseball:
On paper, Ayala versus Glendora is a mismatch.
The Bulldogs are currently the sixth ranked program in the state of California by MaxPreps.
The Tartans sit at No. 367.
In Wednesday’s Palomares League opener at GHS, Riley Cooper led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run off one of the southern section’s elite pitchers, Caleb Trugman.
The Tartans also had the bases loaded with no outs.
However, the 6-foor-5 UCSB commit got out of the jam with minimal damage.
The Bulldogs scored eight runs in the top of the fifth to cruise to a 9-1 victory.
They out-hit GHS, 14-3, including a 4-1 advantage in extra-base hits.
Trugman went five innings to earn the win and improved his personal record to 5-1.
He allowed one run on two hits.
Trugman didn’t issue a walk and registered 11 strikeouts.
Fifty-nine of his 92 pitchers were strikes.
Nolan Chuang and Isaac Serrano both provided a scoreless inning of relief.
Trugman, Chuang and Serrano combined to walk one and strike out 15 Glendora batters.
John Seader and Santiago Garza had one single apiece to account for the rest of the GHS offense.
Tanner Grable got roughed up for seven runs on nine hits and two walks over four innings to get stuck with the loss.
Chase Medina surrendered two runs on three hits in one inning of work.
Andy Flores got the final six outs for Glendora without any damage, including five via strikeout.
The first seven batters in the Bulldogs lineup had at least one hit, and four of the seven had two base hits.
Aiden Granados went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
Dylan Wood had an RBI single, and RBI triple and scored.
Jaden Valenzuela tripled in a run and scored.
Easton Sarmiento went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and one run.
Ivan Ruddell doubled in a run and scored.
Eric Hernandez went 2-for-5 with a run and one RBI.
Trugman helped his own cause by singling twice and scoring one run.
Jonah Boyd singled and scored.
Travis Hutchinson dropped a fifth-inning bunt that scored Boyd.
Up next: Ayala will host Glendora on Friday afternoon at 3:30.

Quotable:
Ayala pitcher, Caleb Trugman: “We go into every game with the same approach, and we don’t take anyone lightly. League games are very important, but we go into every game with the intention of winning. I attacked the zone well. I had a rough first inning, but I knew my team had my back. All the work we put in during the fall has been huge. We feel like a family and have each other’s back. What makes this team special to me is the adversity we fought through and how close we are.”
