Baseball:
Maranatha opened defense of its Olympic League title with a 10-0 victory over Whittier Christian in five innings.
The Minutemen out-hit the Heralds 9-5, and they turned three WCHS errors into seven runs.
Dylan Hoang went all five innings to earn the win.
Hoang scattered five hits, walked three and struck out five.
Hoang tossed 50 strikes in 73 pitches.
Leland Carrido had a pair of singles, while Aiden Echavarria, Elai Guzman and Ryan Park had one hit apiece to account for the rest of the Heralds offense.
Tim Lee got the loss after allowing seven runs (four earned) on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings.
Lee issued three walks and registered three strikeouts.
Yahir Treto singled, triple and scored a pair of runs.
Trevor Rivas singled, doubled and drove in two runs.
Gabe Barragan doubled, scored twice and drew a pair of walks, including one with the bases loaded.
Lukus Perez singled in a run and drew a bases loaded walk.
Bryce Geeting had an RBI single.
Will Suslow went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Jayden Morales walked twice and Dre Murakami walked and reached on an error, and both scored two runs apiece.
Up next: MHS travels to Whittier Christian on Thursday at 3:15 for the second of a three-game set this week with the Heralds.
