Baseball:
To say it’s been a rough start to the 2026 season for the Marshall baseball program would be an understatement.
After a 7-6 season-opening victory over Duarte, the Eagles have dropped consecutive games to Rowland, Costa Mesa, Righetti, Monrovia, Pasadena Poly and Western Christian.
And they lost those six games by a combined margin of 88-16.
That streak ended on Saturday.
Barely.
Elijah Lain did everything he could in a 9-8 victory over visiting Santa Clarita Christian.
Lain went five scoreless innings and surrendered two hits.
He didn’t issue a walk and registered nine strikeouts.
Lain walked off the mound with a 4-0 lead, which includes his 3-run HR in the bottom of the third inning.
The Cardinals, though, scored four in the sixth and seventh innings to make it interesting.
In fact, the Eagles needed five runs in the bottom half of the sixth to secure the one-run victory.
Jacob Trosper went walked, singled, scored twice and his inside-the-park grand slam in the seventh got Santa Clarita Christian to within 9-8.
Zane Stauffer singled twice and scored a pair of runs.
Zach Pena walked, was hit by pitch and scored.
Caydin King drew a pair of walks and scored.
Edward Shaffer singled in a run and scored.
Greg Michlin got the loss after allowing six runs on three hits and five walks over 2 1/3 innings.
Michlin fanned five Marshall batters.
Chris Romero walked, singled and scored.
Kaden Mullins singled, scored twice and drove in one run.
Liam Wahlstrom went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, two runs and an RBI.
Luis Magallanes had an RBI single, an RBI ground out and scored.
Miles Pendleton drew two walks, singled and scored.
Eli Macias singled and Jack Badzey scored.
Up next: The Eagles will host Rowland on Tuesday at 3:30.
