Baseball:

Bonita entered Friday evening’s showdown with their visitors from Los Osos on a three-game losing streak.

The Bearcats lost consecutive games to South Hills, Northview and San Dimas and they tallied a total of two runs.

Things didn’t look promising on Friday.

BHS picked up their bats in the bottom of the fifth trailing 8-4.

Bonita, however, would score once in the fifth, sixth and eighth, and twice in the seventh inning to secure a 9-8 victory over the Grizzlies.

Sean Compton’s deep shot to center was ruled a triple and an error by the outfielder turned it into a dramatic inside-the-park game-winning home run.

Hudson Kunzman was charged with the loss after going one-plus inning and allowing an unearned run on two hits.

Kunzman issued one walk and registered a strikeout.

Compton drew three walks, had the triple and scored two runs.

Joaquin Covarrubias walked, singled and scored twice.

Parker Alexander and Judah Reeve both went 1-for-4 with a run and one RBI apiece.

Gavin Lennig singled twice and scored.

Austin Banuelos went 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.

Reed Tibbetts walked, had a pair of singles and one RBI.

Joaquin Mendez went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Ryder Gibson earned the win after providing four scoreless innings in relief.

Gibson allowed a pair of hits, walked one and struck out nine LOHS batters.

Moses Lanza went 2-for-4 with a double, run and two RBIs.

Wyatt Mohler drew a pair of walks, singled, scored twice and drove in one.

Aaron Rojas went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Bryce Anderson was hit by pitch, walked, scored and had one RBI.

Preston Young was hit by pitch, and he doubled in a run.

Taylor Chairez drove in a run on a sac fly.

Aaron Ziello was hit by pitch and scored a pair of runs from the leadoff spot.

James Kennedy was hit by pitch and scored.

Up next: The Grizzlies travel to Great Oak on Saturday, and the Bearcats visit Santiago on Tuesday.

Quotable:

Bonita’s Sean Compton: “On paper, it probably looked like we were really struggling to get a win, especially after losing three in a row and being down late. But I knew we’d been playing pretty solid baseball overall and it was just a matter of time before things started going our way, especially with the great energy from the whole team and the fact that nobody ever gave up. It felt amazing to come through in that moment for my team, especially since I wasn’t able to against San Dimas, but what I’m most proud of is the collective team effort to push through the adversity and get back in the win column. Now we have some momentum and are ready to take it to Santiago on Tuesday.”
