Wrestling:
The female contingency from 210 Prep Sports programs had an outstanding weekend at the three-day CIF State Championships in Bakersfield.
Of the 29 competitors, 19 were girls.
And of the 10 state placers, nine were young ladies.
Two of the 19 weren’t able to compete because one missed weight (West Covina stud Julie Cimarusti), while the other’s (South Hills’ Ava McGowan) transfer was deemed illegal when her old school (Roosevelt) turned her in for allegedly not having moved.
There was also a lot of history made.
Upland’s Sophia Lopez became the first female in school history to earn a spot in the title match.
Etiwanda had a program-best three state placers, including the first two females in school history.
Sophia Lopez grinded her way to the 170-pound title bout.
Lopez secured first, quarterfinal and semifinal wins via decision.
And she pinned Lincoln’s Alaina Cooper at 1:24 in her second-round match.
Her 6-5 victory over Orange Vista’s Tiffany Bell in the quarterfinal knocked the No. 3 seed out of contention for a trip to the final.
In her championship match, Lopez faced the No. 1 seeded and three-time state champ Leilani Lemus who pinned each of her prior opponents in the first period.
Lemus finished off Lopez in 34 seconds to write her name into the record books.
But her school, program and the SGV are very proud of Sophia Lopez.
Northview had five placers, including three that placed third.
No one worked harder for that third-place podium spot than 145-pound Jules Sitani.
Sitani pulled off literally the hardest way to finish that high.
The No. 3 seed was pinned by No. 30 Avery Naven of Frontier at 5:46 of her opening match.
And then Sitani rolled off seven consecutive victories, including an 8-3 victory over No. 2 seeded Anakarla Hernandez in the third-fourth match.
The Vikings’ Eliana Garcia also placed third at 120 pounds.
Garcia finished 5-1.
Her lone setback was a semifinal round pin at the hands of No. 1 seed and eventual champion SJ Martin of Granada.
Garcia, ranked 29th, secured third by edging Buchanan’s Mariana Gonzalez, 4-3.
Sumaya Lazaro had an amazing run at 140 pounds.
She placed third, going 5-1, including all five wins via pin.
Lazaro’s lone loss was a semifinal pin in the second period to No. 2 Dulcy Martinez.
Martinez ended up the runner up at 140.
Lazaro pinned Downey’s Ivana Cuellar in 38 seconds to earn third place, and it was her second victory over Cuellar in Bakersfield.
San Dimas’ Aubreyelle Baeza had an impressive 5-2 showing at 190 pounds.
It was good enough for fourth place.
Both of her losses came to No. 3 seeded Onyi Oragwan of Centennial.
In the quarterfinal, Oragwan edged Baeza, 4-3, in spite of stalling for most of the third period.
In the third-fourth match, Oragwan pinned Baeza at 1:43.
Baeza pinned three and won two via decision.
Sophia Lazaro went 3-3, and she secured a sixth-place finish at 105 pounds.
Lazaro won her first three matches, and then she lost her last three.
Her first and quarterfinal wins were tech falls over Hope’s Elli Marshall (18-0) and San Marino’s Malia Manibog (18-3).
Lazaro defeated Bakersfield’s Cienna Gutierrez, 10-3, in a second-round bout.
A pair of Etiwanda athletes became the first two in program history to place at state.
Sussette Bell went 5-2 to place seventh at 125 pounds.
Bell won four of her five matches via pin, including a stick of Northview’s Mia Hooper at 2:16 of the seventh-eighth place match.
Lilly Zediker was sixth at 140 pounds.
Zediker went 5-3, including her first four consolation matches.
Zediker was 5-1 before getting pinned by Northview’s Sumaya Lazaro and Peninsula’s Gianna Lopez.
Northview’s Mia Hooper placed eighth at 125 pounds.
She finished 3-3 after winning three of her first four matches.
Hooper pinned Pitman’s Leila Avalos (1:25) and Santa Ana’s Tiffany Nguyen (4:56), and she secured an 18-1 tech fall over Atascadero’s Emma Garrett in the third round.
Etiwanda heavyweight Carlos Sutton was the lone male placer.
He finished eighth in spite of having to forfeit his final two bouts due to an ankle injury.
Sutton pinned Vacaville’s Ezra Cremo (3:29) and Monache’s Diego Ensaldo (1:09) in the first two rounds.
He defeated Frontier’s Nathaniel Espericueta, 4-1, before getting pinned and injured against No. 1 Coby Merrill (JW North) in the quarterfinal.
The Northview girls finished third as a program (100.5 team points) behind Buchanan (147.5) and Marina (109).
