Twenty-nine athletes from 210 Prep Sports programs headed to Bakersfield in the hopes of earning a CIF State championship.
After two days of competition, that list has been narrowed to four who still have a chance.
Northview’s Sophia Lazaro (105), Eliana Garcia (120) and Sumaya Lazaro (140) and Upland’s Sophia Lopez (170) won their quarterfinal round matches on Friday.
Each of the four is a Saturday morning win away from battling on the big stage later that night for a state title.
We started the day with nine athletes in the championship quarterfinals.
105: No. 5 seeded Sophia Lazaro (Northview) dominated No. 4 Malia Manibog of San Marino, 18-3, to earn her semifinal round opportunity on Saturday morning.
Lazaro is set to battle top-seeded Angelica Serratos of Santa Ana.
Serratos had a first-round bye, pinned her next two opponents, and then she defeated Orange Vista’s Audriana Rodriguez, 5-3, in their quarterfinal match.
Eliana Garcia (120) also won via tech fall.
No. 29 Garcia defeated Orland’s fifth-seeded Addison Bernstein, 18-1, on Friday.
Garcia will battle No. 1 SJ Martin of Granada High.
Martin has pinned her way to the semifinals.
Sumaya Lazaro (140) pinned Downey’s Ivana Cuellar at 5:54 of their quarterfinal-round bout.
Lazaro has a bye and three consecutive pins.
The No. 4 seed will face No. 2 Dulcy Martinez (Central Catholic) in the semifinal.
Martinez had a bye, two pins, and she secured a 7-0 victory over Northgate’s Hailey Liu, 7-0, on Friday.
Sophia Lopez edged No. 3 Tiffany Bell of Orange Vista, 6-5, in the quarterfinal-round showdown.
Lopez, seeded sixth, will battle No. 23 Berlynn Solia-Tago of Long Beach Poly on Friday with a spot in the 170-pound title match at stake.
Solia-Tago pinned her first two opponents, and then she defeated No. 2 Aiyanna Beane (American Canyon), 11-2, on Friday.
In other quarterfinal action, five others lost, but they are one win on Saturday morning from a guaranteed podium spot.
Upland’s Rebecca Dezan was pinned at 5:28 to No. 1 seeded Aubree Gutierrez (Marina) in their 115-pound quarterfinal bout.
No. 40 Dezan will battle Temecula Valley’s Olive Lachiara, who is the No. 11 seed.
No. 8 Mia Hooper (125) was defeated 11-4 by No. 1 seeded Angelina Borelli of Los Banos.
Hooper has a Saturday morning showdown with Santa Ana’s Tiffany Nguyen.
San Dimas’ Aubreyelle Baeza fell, 4-3, to Centennial’s and No. 3 seeded Onyi Oragwam, in spite of a couple of sources saying her opponent stalled for most of the third period.
Baeza will face off with San Marcos’ Diana Duarte in the blood round.
Michael Baeza was pinned by No. 1 Wes Buford of Oakdale at 1:55 of their 215-pound quarterfinal bout.

Quotable:
Northview coach, Roy Lazaro: “We are so proud of everyone. Unfortunately, we did lose one today. Each of the six left has a great chance to place. Tomorrow’s schedule includes a lot of rematches and familiar opponents. Sophia, Eliana and Sumaya all expected to be in this position, but this is state and nothing is given. Each of the three girls feels excited and they can’t wait until Saturday afternoon.”
