Day 1 at CIF State Championships in Bakersfield:
The first of three days at the CIF State Championships in Bakersfield saw nine wrestlers from 210 Prep Sports programs earn spots in Friday’s championship quarterfinal round.
Seven of which are girls, including four from Northview and two from Upland.
The results for everyone that competed are below, as is a link to a photo gallery.
Sadly, West Covina’s Julie Cimarusti, who won CIF-SS and Masters titles the last two weeks at 140 pounds did not make weight and she was disqualified.
At the same weight, South Hills’ Ava McGowan was deemed ineligible, but I could not get any further clarification from CIF.
Northview’s Sophia Lazaro (105 pounds, 2-0), Eliana Garcia (120, 2-0), Mia Hooper (125, 2-0) and Sumaya Lazaro (140, 2-0) all won both of their matches, and that doesn’t include byes.
Upland’s Rebecca Dezan cruised at 115 pounds in both of her matches, as did 170-pound Sophia Lopez.
Aubreyelle Baeza pinned both of her opponents in less than 90 seconds in the 190-pound bracket.
For the boys, San Dimas’ Michael Baeza went 3-0 at 215 pounds.
And Etiwanda heavyweight Carlos Sutton pinned his first two opponents and then secured a decision victory in the third round.
Baeza and Sutton will battle the No. 1 seeds in Friday’s quarterfinal in their respective weight classes.
No one that competed on Thursday has been eliminated.
But for those who lost their first match, they’re trip to Bakersfield will end shortly with a first-round consolation loss on Friday.
