Softball:
Rio Hondo Prep had to work overtime in the 2026 season opener.
The Kares outlasted their visitors from Ramona Convent, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon.
RHP scored one run in the fifth inning and once in in the eighth.
Ramona Convent didn’t score until the top of the seventh.
Rio Hondo Prep out-hit the Tigers, 7-4.
Allie Scott went three scoreless and hitless innings, and she issued a pair of walks.
Madison Ro lasted five innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Ro didn’t offer a free pass, and she struck out five Tigers batters.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Ramona Convent had the bases loaded and no outs.
They were only able to push across one run on a Rosie Rosales RBI ground out.
Drew Cardoza singled and scored.
Abigail Vazquez, Aiden Velazquez and Isella Cortez had one single apiece to account for the rest of the Tigers offense.
Isella Cortez got the loss after surrendering two runs on seven hits over seven-plus innings.
Cortez issued three walks and registered seven strikeouts.
In the fifth inning, and with two outs, RHP took a 1-0 lead thanks to a dropped third strike which allowed Ro to score.
Janna Taflinger had an eighth-inning single, and she scored the game-winning run on an Evonny Ortega base hit.
Ryen Covey doubled twice, and Zoey Chen had a double of her own.
Madison Burl singled in Tuesday’s win.
Up next: RHP travel to Westridge next Wednesday at 3:30.
