Marshall Edges Duarte, 7-6, in Tuesday’s Season Opener; Lain & Steinberg Combine to Allow No Earned Runs in 6 2/3 IP

Baseball:

Marshall held on for a 7-6 victory over their visitors from Duarte in the season opener for both programs.

However, the Eagles nearly squandered a 6-0 lead thanks to three errors that cost them four runs.

The Falcons hamstrung themselves as well.

After pulling to within 7-6 and with two one and no outs in the top of the seventh, their first out came via offensive interference.

And then Bryce Steinberg induced a ground out, and he ended the game on a strikeout.

Elijah Lain went the first 3 2/3 innings, and he was charged with three unearned runs on two hits.

Lain didn’t issue a walk and registered three strikeouts.

Duarte got to Caleb Kaloostian for two runs on three hits and a walk over 1/3 of an inning.

Steinberg got the final nine outs, allowing an unearned run on two hits to earn the win.

Steinberg didn’t issue a free pass and as mentioned, he struck out the final batter of the game.

Esai Trejo went 2-for-3 with a double, run and three RBIs.

Matthew Solis singled twice and scored a pair of runs.

Leonel Cardona singled, doubled and scored.

Trejo got the loss after surrendering six runs on three hits and five walks over two innings.

Lain walked and had a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning.

Eli Macias walked, scored and his RBI double in the fifth extended the Eagles lead to 7-5.

Chris Romero drew a walk, singled and scored twice from the leadoff spot.

Kaden Mullins went 1-for-2 with a walk, run and one RBI.

Steinberg singled and scored.

Troy Hernandez walked and scored.

Liam Wahlstrom drove in a run on a sac fly.

Ian Macready scored once, and he was hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

Up next: The Eagles travel to Rowland on Thursday at 3.
