Girls Soccer:

Bonita didn’t want to depend on last-minute heroics.

Four days ago, the Bearcats scored in the final 30 seconds at La Serna to tie the game at 1-1.

Early in the golden goal overtime period, BHS scored to stun their visitors from LSHS.

Fast forward to Wednesday evening, and Bonita would earn a spot in the CIF-SS Division 2 semifinals thanks to a 2-0 victory over ML King of Riverside.

In the first half, junior Haley Kurey delivered a perfect pass to senior Abby Coppolo to go up 1-0.

In the second half, Haley Kurey beat two defenders and put the ball in the net to give BHS a 2-0 lead.

Zoey Ochoa did more than her share by pitching a shutout in goal.

Up next: The Lady Bearcats will host Long Beach Millikan on Saturday.

The Rams (17-4-1) got by Warren, 1-0, on Wednesday evening.

Quotable:

Bonita senior, Abby Coppolo: “Overall, I think the preparation for today’s game was really good. I think we came out dominating and showed that we truly wanted this, but we just needed that final piece to score. As soon as Malia hit the cross, I saw Haley back post and I knew this was a really good opportunity for our team. I called for it, and Haley and I made eye contact right as she passed it, and honestly, I just hit it in the top corner because I knew it would be hard to block. As soon as I saw it hit the back of the net, I felt so much pressure was off our team. Running and celebrating with the whole team was so special, because it was such a big game. In the second half, when Haley scored, I was so hyped and we kept good defense throughout the whole game, but especially in second half. Once that final whistle blew, celebrating with everyone was such a great moment, because all the work we put in all season helped us get to where we are now. And we are going to semifinal round for the first time in years.”

Bonita senior, Kody McKinney: “Maddie, Peyton, Grace and I communicate very well on the field and understand how each other plays. We calm one another down in high-pressure situations and constantly lift each other up. We trust one another, including our goalie, Zoe, who has played amazingly throughout CIF, and she provides a strong sense of calm when things get stressful.”

Bonita junior, Haley Kurey: “First, all glory to God for giving my team the ability to play the game we love. Assist started with a great ball from a corner kick by Malia, I tried to give our team a chance and placed the ball in the middle, and Abby finished like a pro. My team kept giving me chances and I was able to take one through the defense, and finish to give us a 2-0 lead.”
