Boys Hoops:

Bonita knocked Walnut out of a first-place tie atop the Palomares League standings with Ayala.

The Bearcats secured an important 60-55 victory at Walnut on Wednesday evening.

With two games to play, BHS and WHS are tied for second place, and they sit just one-game back of Ayala.

Bonita will host Glendora on Friday, and they travel to Ayala on Monday.

The Bearcats got out to an 18-8 lead in the first quarter, and they withstood Walnut’s 20-13 run in the fourth period to sweep the Mustangs.

James Kim led Bonita and all scorers with a game-high 25 points.

The Bearcats point guard scored seven points in the first period run, including a 3-pointer.

Kim had 13 points more than his next closest teammate, and 10 more than Walnut’s leading scorer.

Beau Rudometkin scored 12 points and Brayden Henderson finished with eight points in the win.

Jakson Clement chipped in with six points in the win.

Jeremiah Vasquez and Chris Hernandez led Walnut with 15 points apiece.

Vasquez hit a pair of 3’s, and Hernandez went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Zayn Karim produced 12 points in the loss.

Quotable:

Bonita senior, James Kim: “I would say we’re pretty ready for the last two games of the regular season. We’ve been practicing hard and playing some of our best basketball of the season. We’re not going to look past Glendora to Ayala. We didn’t play very well at GHS, and I think you’ll see a different energy level from us on Friday when we face off at BHS. These are potentially the last two regular season games of my basketball career, so I’m going to play hard and do everything I can to help us win, and I know my teammates will do the same.”
