Water Polo:
Glendora made history on Tuesday.
And they did so in dramatic fashion.
The Tartans edged Malibu, 9-8, when Collin Harper’s golden goal earned GHS its first CIF-SS Division 3 quarterfinal round appearance in program history.
With the game tied at 7-7, in the final seconds of the first of two three-minute overtimes, Glendora goalie Giancarlo Figueroa retrieved the ball and heaved it the length of the pool to give the Tartans an 8-7 lead.
Malibu evened the contest in the second OT before Harper’s heroics.
Figueroa had a monster game, including 18 saves, six steals, one assist and the goal in OT.
Reed Thompson, Logan Gibson and Zach Newkirk scored two goals apiece for the Tartans.
Ricky Busse scored once in the fourth quarter.
Up next: The Tartans will host Temple City on Friday with a time to be determined.
The Rams (17-10) defeated their visitors from Arcadia, 17-14, in their second-round contest.
Quotable:
GHS coach, Alba Espinar Gomez: “I’m very proud of the team for their determination and perseverance in this game. As the No. 15 ranked team in the division traveling to the No. 4 team, playing in a very small pool, it was bound to be a really tough battle. Down the stretch, we lost two key starters, so we played the same guys for more than half the game. Collin Harper, who ended up scoring the game winner played through a pretty bad cramp for the last two overtime periods, and he refused to come out. Nothing was going to stop them from winning this game and I’m in awe of their mental strength and ability to never give up.”
Box Score:
