Football:
Whittier Christian outscored Maranatha, 33-14, in the second half of their Mesquite League finale at MHS.
Unfortunately for the Heralds, the Minutemen scored the game’s first 28 points, and they held on for a 42-39 victory.
WCHS pulled to within 28-25 in the third quarter, but the Minutemen never trailed.
The Heralds will look back in frustration when thinking about four missed extra-points, including a pair of kicks and two-point attempts.
Cooper Berry was efficient behind center.
Berry completed 18-of-29 for 198 yards.
That included three TD passes and one pick.
Berry also rushed for a team-high 140 yards on 12 carries.
Morgan Freeman gained 106 yards on 18 carries, including one TD run.
Sammy Byrnes totaled 15 rushing yards on four carries and one score.
Nico Vergara had game highs in receptions (8) and receiving yards (98) to go with one TD catch in the first quarter.
Bradley Loiacono totaled 68 receiving yards on five catches.
Two of the five were TD receptions.
Luke Hanrahan had five catches for 32 yards.
Juan Mayorga and N Behzadi had four tackles apiece to lead the MHS defense.
Mayorga had a sack and Nick Goodman scored on an 8-yard pick-six.
Niko Lareau was 6-for-6 on extra-point attempts, and he was efficient with his punts and kickoffs.
