Football:
One of the great things about sports is that athletes get to decide who wins and loses games.
And rightfully so, these players don’t give a s*** about analytics, ranking comparisons and most of all, what so-called experts in the media predict will happen.
That gets us to Chino Hills on Friday night.
Almost no one outside of their locker room, family or school gave them much of a chance of knocking off their visitors from Damien.
The Huskies (71) entered the contest 39 spots behind the Spartans (32) in the most recent MaxPreps state poll.
Chino Hills silenced their doubters with a massive 27-19 victory.
CHHS took a 7-0 lead 4:21 into the second quarter and they never trailed.
Because of the win, Chino Hills has earned the right to compete for an outright Baseline League championship next Thursday evening at Rancho Cucamonga.
Alex Medyn calmly and skillfully ran an efficient CHHS offense.
Medyn scored on a 1-yard TD run with 7:39 to play in the first half to give the Huskies a 7-0 lead.
Just over four minutes later, Dillon MacKie’s 42-yard field goal got Damien on the board.
Medyn and Nate Jarrett hooked up on an 8-yard TD connection just before the half to extend the Huskies advantage to 14-3.
Noah Ahari booted a 34-yard field goal with 8:12 to play in the third period, and Chino Hills took a 17-3 lead.
As they’ve done all season, Damien put up a valiant fight in the second half.
On the final play of the third quarter, Isaiah Arriaza found Eric Osorio on a 3-yard TD pass to pull the Spartans to within a touchdown of Chino Hills.
Ahari’s 42-yard field goal 1:43 into the fourth gave CHHS a little breathing room.
But back came DHS.
Just 53 seconds later, Arriaza tossed a 34-yard scoring strike to Xavier Keyzers.
Unfortunately for the boys in green, the extra-point attempt failed which made it a four-point (20-16) game.
Alex Medyn’s 64-yard TD strike to Jacob Jimenez at 7:04 of the fourth quarter gave Chino Hills a 27-16 lead.
Damien’s final scoring play on Friday was a 39-yard field goal from Dillon MacKie with 4:09 to play.
Medyn completed 16-of-21 for 193 yards, including the two passing and one rushing TD.
Jimenez had a huge night.
Jimenez gained 80 yards on seven carries, and he caught a pair of passes for 74 yards.
Calum Ferrell totaled 56 receiving yards on six catches.
The CHHS defense held Damien stud Micah McFarland to 27 yards rushing on nine carries.
Arriaza went 17-of-27 for 268 yards and the TDs to Osorio and Keyzers.
Osorio had six receptions for 59 yards.
Travon Garrison caught four passes for 68 yards, Gavin Williams had a 43-yard reception and Raymond Ahumada totaled 31 receiving yards on four catches.
The Huskies offense got the ball back after MacKie’s field goal with four minutes to play and Damien never saw the ball again.

Quotable:
Chino Hills quarterback, Alex Medyn: “Coming into the game, we knew they were a physical, talented team, but we believed in our scheme and the guys we have. When we come together, it’s hard to stop us. This win felt great, and it was special to do that in front of our home crowd on senior night. Our defense has been the heart of this team. These guys put in more work than anybody and it shows on Friday nights. Our D-line did a great job disrupting Isaiah’s timing, and our defensive backs kept everything in front of them. Damien’s offense is explosive, and our guys held them to 19 points, so big props to the defense. Our goal from week zero was to win the Baseline League, so we’re fired up. Coach Keland reenforced it every week, and we earned it! We’re all excited to get started on next week’s preparation for RCHS.”
