Football:

San Dimas must have left West Covina frustrated and feeling like they let one slip away.

The Saints took a 14-0 advantage into the half, and they enjoyed a 20-7 lead in the third quarter.

However, with 13 seconds to play, the Bulldogs scored on a field goal to defeat the Saints, 23-20, in a Valle Vista League thriller.

With the game tied at 20-20 late in the fourth quarter, West Covina’s Vance Davis picked a Brandon Meredith pass near the 10-yard line, and he brought it back approximately 40 yards.

The Bulldogs offense was able to drive the ball to the San Dimas 20-yard line.

And in stepped Isaiah Rodrigues to play the role of hero.

Rodrigues booted a 37-yard field goal with 13 seconds to play.

The Saints’ passing game was almost nonexistent.

Jose Camarena and Meredith combined to go 3-for-11 for 48 yards.

Neither tossed a TD pass.

San Dimas’ ground game totaled 195 yards on 42 carries, including three touchdowns.

Jacob Gallegos did the lion’s share of the work, carrying the ball 23 times for 99 yards.

Gallegos scored on TD runs of 3 and 2 yards to give SDHS a 14-0 lead.

Daniel Baeza gained 40 yards on three carries, including a 34-yard TD run in the third quarter.

The Saints missed their extra-point attempt and had to settle for a 20-7 lead.

Adam D’Amato carried the ball seven times for 37 yards.

Gallegos had a 17-yard reception and Keenan Hoyt reeled in a 23-yard pass.

Trailing 20-7, Vance Davis and quarterback Elias Irvin hooked up on a 20-yard TD in the third quarter.

Josiah Joseph’s 1-yard TD run in the fourth gave WCHS the chance to take a 21-20 lead.

However, the extra-point attempt failed.

Thankfully for West Covina, they won’t have to look back on this game knowing a special teams’ blunder cost them a VVL contest.

Irvin completed 11-of-14 for 105 yards.

He had the one TD and one interception.

Noah Davis led the WCHS rushing attack with 75 yards on eight carries.

Isaac Villescas totaled 45 rushing yards on eight carries.

Ivan Gonzalez had game highs in receptions (4) and receiving yards (64).

Vance Davis caught three passes for 27 yards, including the 20-yard TD in the third quarter.

Up next: The Bulldogs host Baldwin Park, and the Saints welcome Northview.

Both games are slated for Friday at 7.
