Boys Athlete of the Week:
When people talk about the success Damien has been enjoying of late, some of the first names that come to mind are quarterback Isaiah Arriaza, receivers Eric Osorio and Travon Garrison, and two-way stud, Gavin Williams.
And they’re all having terrific seasons for the Spartans.
Arriaza (140-of 215 for 1,944 yards & 19 TDs, 204 rushing yards and 3 scores), Osorio (50 receptions for 697 yards & 5 TDs), Garrison (26-for-536 & 7 TDs) and Williams (19-for-330, 4 TDs, 45 tackles & 2 INT) have been key to DHS sitting at 6-1 and one-game back of Chino Hills and Rancho Cucamonga in the Baseline League title chase.
However, one kid that doesn’t get as much credit as this reporter thinks he should by those of us in the media is junior running back, Malachi McFarland.
In Friday’s 49-31 victory at Etiwanda, McFarland carried the ball 13 times for 188 yards.
And that included three TD runs.
McFarland averaged 15 yards per carry with a long of 75.
That was 111 yards more than he did in a (24-22) Baseline League opening loss to Rancho Cucamonga last week.
He also caught a pair of Arriaza passes for 16 yards.
For the season, McFarland has 80 carries for 729 yards.
That is 525 yards more than his next closest teammate (Arriaza, 204).
Malachi leads the Spartans ground game with nine TD runs.
He averages 104 yards per game, nine yards per carry and he’s surpassed the 100-yard mark three times in the first seven games.
McFarland has totaled 17 catches for 96 yards and one TD.
