Covina was staring at a 2-3 record directly in the face on Friday night.
Trailing 27-21, the Colts had just failed on a fourth-down play in the waning moments.
However, a pass interference call and some clutch plays by Roy Vazquez and Matt Olivas led CHS to a 28-27 victory over the Chiefs.
The Covina senior duo was solid throughout, but it was a last-minute 48-yard hook up that set up the game winning score.
Olivas caught the pass, did a 180, and fell to the turf near the 5-yard line.
Two plays later, and Vazquez rumbled in from the 1-yard line and a 28-27 victory.
Vazquez completed 27 of his 38 pass attempts for 302 yards.
He tossed three TD passes and didn’t turn the ball over.
Vazquez carried the ball six times for 24 yards and the late score.
Olivas isn’t a big guy, but he was huge in the win.
He reeled in 13 passes for 168 yards.
And that included TD receptions of 6, 55 and 5 yards.
Through the first five games, Vazquez is 67-of-104 for 910 yards.
He tossed 13 TD passes and three interceptions.
Vazquez has gained 226 yards on 35 carries, including five TD runs.
Olivas has team highs in receptions (15), receiving yards (226) and TD catches (6).
In fact, he has 60-percent of the Colts TD receptions.
Up next: The Colts face Chino on Friday in the Hacienda League opener at CDF.
The Cowboys (1-4) lost their first four games before securing a 34-7 victory at Don Lugo in week four.
