Football:

Rio Hondo Prep ran all over St. Anthony in Friday’s 52-17 beatdown over the Saints.

Don’t let the final score mislead you.

The Kares led 45-3 before SAHS scored their first TD of the game midway through the third quarter.

RHP had a 315-36 advantage on the ground.

Noah Penunuri made some history.

Penunuri rushed for 117 yards on six carries.

That included TD runs of 65 and 2 yards.

It was the two-time CIF-SS champ’s first real start since the week zero opener in which he got injured at the beginning of the second quarter.

And Penunuri used the opportunity to surpass the 4,000 career rushing yards plateau to go with four tackles on defense.

Tyler Dang scored twice for the Kares.

He caught a 14-yard TD pass from Yanick Diaz.

And Dang returned a fumble 16 yards that was caused by Rainn Pollock to give Rio Hondo Prep a 7-0 lead just 45 seconds into Friday’s contest.

Deven Gomez carried the ball three times for 74 yards, including a 65-yard TD run early in the third quarter.

Nathaniel Shine scored on a 20-yard TD run, and he finished with 23 yards on two carries.

Christian Lee gained 52 yards on four carries.

Diaz completed 2-of-5 for 37 yards.

Isaac Guzman’s 2-yard TD run capped RHP’s scoring at 10:10 of the fourth quarter.

Easton Jara went 7-for-7 on extra-point attempts, and he booted a 43-yard field goal in the second quarter to give the Kares a 38-3 lead.

St. Anthony’s Andres Mendoza completed 12-of-24 for 240 yards.

And that included a 52-yard scoring strike to Aidan Jones.

Jones also scored on a 3-yard TD run on the final play of the game.

Mendoza had game highs in receptions (6) and receiving yards (142).

Preston Hochman led the Saints with 48 rushing yards on eight carries.

Matt Montez and Troy Seto led the RHP defense with five tackles apiece.

Ethan Lo, Pollock and Penunuri totaled four tackles each.

Lee had three tackles.

Jeff Floridino-Weninger booted a 26-yard field goal for St. Anthony in the first quarter.

Up next: RHP travels to Dallas to battle First Baptist.

The Saints (4-1) have won four consecutive games, including Friday’s 56-12 beatdown of Mercy Culture Prep.

Quotable:

RHP senior, Noah Penunuri: “It feels great to be back on that field with my boys having fun and playing to honor the Lord. The team has done great so far, and I’m excited to see how we do going forward.”
