Boys Athletes of the Week:
West Covina began the 2025 season with a rare week-zero bye, and they followed that with three consecutive road games.
The Bulldogs fell at Los Altos, 21-7, in week one.
Fast forward one week, and WCHS held El Rancho scoreless in the second half to claim a 21-14 victory in Pico Rivera.
That set up Friday’s Kings of Cameron showdown at Covina District Field against South Hills.
A number of West Covina players said they were motivated by last year’s 16-13 loss to the Huskies after SHHS outscored the Bulldogs 13-0 in the fourth quarter.
Additionally, a number of Bulldogs claimed they got amped up reading the social media posts all week from their counterparts at South Hills.
Their motivation turned into a resounding 48-23 victory in front of several thousand Bulldog and Huskies’ fans.
WCHS scored first and never trailed on Friday evening.
It’s their fifth Kings of Cameron victory in the last six years.
Three West Covina players enjoyed starring roles in the win.
That included Moses Gogue, Elias Irvin and Isaac Villescas.
Since 2022, Chris Perez had started every game behind center for the Bulldogs.
And that includes the first two games of the 2025 season.
But first-year coach Bai Kabba inserted Elias Irvin into the starting role, and it paid off.
Irvin ran the offense smoothly all night, and the 48 points scored was the program’s best since a 48-7 week-one victory over Ontario back in 2021.
Irvin tossed three TD passes in the win, including a 65-yard strike to Vance Davis in the third quarter.
Moses Gogue and Irvin hooked up on two scores.
Gogue’s 7-yard TD reception from Irvin in the first quarter gave the Bulldogs a 21-7 lead.
The WCHS duo would combine on a 6-yard TD, as West Covina enjoyed a 28-7 advantage at the break.
And then there was Isaac Villescas.
His 37-yard TD run in the first quarter opened the scoring for both programs.
And after Jacob Gallardo’s 61-yard TD run and two-point conversion pulled the Huskies to within 28-15 of the Bulldogs, Villescas took the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a score and a 35-15 lead.
Up next: The Bulldogs travel to Rancho Bernardo on Friday at 7.
The Broncos (3-0) had a week-three bye.
