Football:

If one looked at the game stats from Friday’s Marquez-Rio Hondo Prep showdown, you could easily extrapolate that the final score was competitive.

However, that was not the case.

RHP improved to 4-0 after its 49-20 victory over their visitors from Huntington Park.

They are one of four 210 Prep Sports programs without a loss.

The other three are Claremont, Damien and Monrovia.

The stats I mentioned included the following:

Marquez had advantages in first downs (23-21), passing yards (186-147) and time of possession (32-16).

RHP edged the Gladiators in total offense (451-430) and they had a 60-yard advantage in rushing yards (304-244).

And as always, the only stat that matters is the final score.

But it goes to prove that even in years in which the Kares aren’t dominating their opponents statistically, Mark Carson’s boys find a way to get the W.

Since 2023, RHP is 21-2 in the regular season.

Marquez actually took an early 6-0 lead when Elyjah Staples hooked up with Giovanny Calderon on a 77-yard TD just 90 seconds into the game.

Unfortunately for the Gladiators, Rio Hondo Prep scored 35 unanswered points to pull away.

Tyler Dang scored three total touchdowns.

He caught TD passes of 21 and 9 yards from Yanick Diaz.

And Dang scored on a 1-yard TD run in the third quarter to extend the Kares lead to 28-6.

Dang finished with three receptions for 57 yards, and he gained 28 yards on three carries.

Diaz was an effective 10-of-15 for 147 yards.

Aside from his two scoring passes to Dang, Diaz found Rainn Pollock on a 10-yard TD.

Christian Lee led RHP with 83 yards rushing on six carries.

Deven Gomez carried the ball five times for 55 yards, including a 3-yard TD run with 3:12 to play.

Troy Seto scored on a 5-yard TD run.

Nathaniel Shine gained 46 yards on two carries.

Shine also caught three passes for 36 yards.

Lee had six tackles and an interception on defense.

Landon Scott totaled three tackles and one pick.

Aiden Delgadillo, Elijah Gavia and Shine had one sack apiece in Friday’s win.

Gilberto Cisneros had a game-high 159 yards on 22 carries for Marquez.

Staples had six receptions for 141 yards, including TD catches of 77 and 5 yards.

Up next: The Kares travel to Bellflower next Friday at 7.

The Bucs (3-0) defeated Whittier, 28-6, on Thursday evening.
