Football:

Bonita entered Friday’s Smudge Pot rivalry game with an 0-3 record.

And the Bearcats were without the services of their two best players in quarterback Travis Lippert and running back/linebacker, Joseph Lara.

BHS, though, shook off an early pick-six and cruised to a 28-14 victory over SDHS at Mt. San Antonio College.

Four-time CIF-SS champion coach Steve Bogan is now 7-0 against his San Dimas counterpart, Mark Holman.

Since 2018, Bonita has defeated SDHS by a combined margin of 215-87.

As mentioned, the Saints took a 7-0 lead when Liam Loyola picked a Cade Burbidge pass with 10 minutes to play in the first half, and he brought it back 39 yards for a TD.

Five minutes later, Sebastian Vasquez tied the game at 7-7 with his 3-yard TD run.

Jacob Maddox gave Bonita its first lead after a 32-yard TD run with just north of two minutes to play in the first half.

To their credit, San Dimas bounced back in the third quarter when Jacob Gallegos caught a 36-yard scoring strike from Brandon Meredith to tie the game at 14-14.

However, the Bearcats would close out their seventh consecutive win over the Saints on a 14-0 run.

Midway through the third period, Burbidge hooked up with Adam Hodgson on a 19-yard TD.

And with 6:14 to play, Adrian Garza rumbled in from five yards out to put the game on ice.

On the field, BHS is 2-2, but they self-reported themselves when they found out an ineligible player entered the game with three minutes to play in their 37-0 victory over Diamond Ranch.

San Dimas is also 2-2.

After a near 30-point loss to Burbank in week zero, the Saints were awarded the win after the Bulldogs had used an ineligible player.

The Bonita defense held San Dimas to 195 yards of total offense.

Vasquez (103) and Maddox (76) combined for 179 rushing yards and two scores.
