Football:
As Covina heads into its bye week, the Colts can be happy to be 2-1.
And they left the Phillips Ranch area on Friday night with a 48-46 victory over Diamond Ranch.
Although they never trailed, there was certainly some late-game drama.
With a 41-40 lead at the 18-yard line and just north of two minutes to play, Covina needed a first down to end the game.
The Panthers allowed CHS quarterback Roy Vasquez a clear lane to the end zone.
It was a smart and strategic decision to give themselves enough time to try and tie the game.
And while his coaches were screaming to take a knee at the 1-yard line, Vasquez scored to give the Colts a 48-40 lead.
Needing a touchdown and a two-point conversion to tie the game, DRHS drove to the Covina 6-yard line.
For the seventh time on Friday night, Cory Wilson scored a rushing TD.
On the 2-point conversion, the Panthers tied the game at 48-48 in spite of the Colts jumping offsides.
However, in high school, it’s a dead-ball infraction, which meant Diamond Ranch had to go for the tie from an even shorter distance.
The Panthers attempted a quarterback sneak, but for what seemed one of the only times all night, the CHS defense made a stop to secure the win.
Cory Wilson, who is normally the DRHS receiver, had to replace an injured running back.
And man, Wilson made his presence felt.
He carried the ball 31 times for 305 yards.
That included seven rushing TDs.
Wilson also caught five passes for 72 yards.
As far as the Covina ‘O’ went, they compiled 437 yards of total offense.
Roy Vazquez completed 9-for-15 for 147 yards.
Vazquez tossed a pair of TD passes and didn’t turn the ball over.
Vazquez also gained 117 yards on 10 carries.
He scored a pair of rushing TDs, including what turned out to be the game-winning points.
Gatsbee Gumban carried the ball 20 times for 173 yards.
Gumban found the end zone three times, including a 70-yard TD run on the first play from scrimmage.
The Great Gatsbee reeled in a pair of passes for 64 yards
Kevin Perez caught four passes for 37 yards and one score.
Matt Olivas had two receptions for 34 yards.
Aidan Spencer made six of his seven extra-point attempts.
Up next: The Colts will take their bye during week three, and then, on September 19th, CHS will meet up at Covina District Field to battle Northview.
