Football:
An argument could be made that Damien is the San Gabriel Valley’s top program through week two.
The Spartans improved to 3-0 after Friday’s 38-28 victory over St. Paul in DHS’ 2025 home opener.
Damien led 10-0 after 12 minutes, and they took a 24-7 lead into the break.
The outcome was never in doubt.
The ‘undersized’ Isaiah Arriaza as scouts may ignorantly see him continues to play like a quarterback that stands at 6-foot-5.
Arriaza threw for 284 yards.
He completed 10-of-18 pass attempts, which means he averaged 28 yards per completion.
Arriaza also tossed four TD passes.
In his two years and three games behind center, DHS is now 19-6, which is a program best among Spartans’ quarterbacks this century.
As well as Arriaza played, it was Malachi McFarland who made some school history.
McFarland rushed for 175 yards on 13 carries, and that included a 99-yard TD run.
Xavier Keyzers caught a 69-yard TD pass from Arriaza, and Eric Osorio reeled in a 64-yard TD reception for the Spartans.
Travon Garrison and Arriaza hooked up on a 36-yard score.
Gavin Williams caught an 11-yard TD pass in the win.
It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, though.
The Spartans were flagged 17 times, and they’ll hear about it on Saturday from their coaching staff.
Through week two, though, DHS has defeated Aquinas, JSerra and St. Paul, respectively, by a combined margin of 92-74.
Up next: The Spartans will host Tustin on Friday at 7.
The Tillers (2-1) dropped a 28-27 decision at Long Beach Poly on Friday.
