College Football:
If one saw the stat sheet, it would appear that Chaffey got the better of Citrus in Saturday’s season opener in Glendora.
The Panthers had advantages in first downs (23-14), rushing (134-18) and total offense (306-210).
However, in the stat that matters the most, the scoreboard read 33-20 in favor of the Owls.
Trailing 26-20 with just over two minutes to play and the ball at their own 9-yard line, Chaffey made its way towards the west end zone.
And they were nearing the red zone.
However, Curlee Kirkpatrick intercepted a Frankie Villalbazo pass and brought it back 95 yards to put the game on ice.
Kirkpatrick intercepted Villalbazo twice and he totaled 131 return yards.
Brian Salazar had a memorable and a consequential effort in his college debut.
Salazar completed 16-of-23 for 164 yards.
He tossed three TD passes and no picks.
Salazar got Citrus on the board with a 9-yard scoring strike to Keyonn Chatmann just five minutes into Saturday’s showdown.
With 21 seconds remaining in the first half, Salazar found JP Sandiford on a 17-yard TD in the east end zone.
Early in the fourth quarter, Salazar’s 16-yard TD to Cameron Bateman extended the Owls lead to 26-13.
Bateman led all receivers with five catches, and he finished with 57 yards.
Lorenza Simmons caught four passes for 24 yards, and Jojo Enriquez reeled in three passes for 29 yards.
Angel Barraza led Citrus with 17 yards rushing on four carries.
Villalbazo completed 11-of-19 for Chaffey for 139 yards.
The former Bishop Amat signal caller did not find the end zone, and he turned the ball over twice.
Hakim Halliburton had game highs in carries (18), rushing yards (76) and rushing TDs (3).
Halliburton scored on TD runs of 2, 2 and 3 yards, respectively.
Nathan Enriquez caught three passes for 76 yards, and Nehemiah Harrison totaled four receptions for 64 yards.
Durand Johnson, Jacob Cox and Bear Baker had six tackles apiece for the Owls.
Donovan Perez, Jadakiss Vaokakala and Maddox Barrios totaled five tackles apiece.
Zyhaire Lewis and Trayshawn Walker led Chaffey with six tackles each.
Jalen Carter and Miking Cash had five tackles apiece.
Citrus got a 33-and-30-yard field goals by Alex Hernandez.
