Football:

For the first time in what seems forever, a Rio Hondo Prep opponent had the advantage in total offense.

Even more rare, the Kares went more than 30 minutes without scoring, and they were blanked in the second and third quarters.

However, and predictably, Mark Carson, his staff and their players found a way to grind out a victory.

RHP outscored Quartz Hill, 15-7, in the fourth quarter, and they went on to secure a 28-21 victory over their visitors.

Rio Hondo Prep also went to battle without their leader, Noah Penunuri, who left the week zero game early in the second quarter after being targeted with a helmet to the ribs.

No one is going to feel sorry for the reigning two-time CIF-SS champs, and the Kares wouldn’t expect or want any sympathy.

RHP led 13-0 and 21-7 in the first and fourth quarters, respectively.

Quartz Hill fought back, but with 1:21 to play, Christian Lee’s 1-yard TD run turned out to be the game winning points.

Lee had a game-high 70 yards rushing on 15 carries.

His 5-yard TD run midway through the first quarter gave the Kares a 13-0 lead.

Nathaniel Shine gained 35 yards on 12 carries, and his 6-yard TD run just 1:39 into the game got Rio Hondo Prep out to a quick 7-0 advantage.

Yanick Diaz completed 3-of-6 for 61 yards, including a 19-yard scoring strike to Elias Har early in the fourth quarter.

Har also totaled 37 yards rushing on six carries.

Calogero Chico carried the ball six times for 27 yards.

Malaqai Nurse completed 9-of-16 for 179 yards.

Nurse tossed a pair of TD passes and two interceptions.

Nurse found Sean Diaz on a 20-yard score in the second quarter, and another 20-yarder to Max Echanique in the fourth period.

Diaz had game highs in receptions (6) and receiving yards (90).

Calogero Chico and Tyler Dang intercepted Nurse.

Nathaniel Shine and Elijah Gavia led the RHP defense with six tackles apiece.

Ethan Lo tallied five tackles and a sack, and Tyler Dang finished with five tackles to go with his pick.

Troy Seto had three tackles and a sack.

RHP had a 168-82 advantage on the ground, but QHHS had 261 yards of total offense, as compared to 229 for the Kares.

Rio Hondo Prep had a 10-minute advantage in the time of possession battle.

Up next: The Kares travel to Maranatha on Thursday at 7.

The Minutemen (2-0) just dropped a 49-7 beatdown on Artesia in their week-one contest.
