Football:

Monrovia coach Jose Casagran hopes to get nine more regular season wins after outlasting Brentwood in the 2025 season opener.

Casagran and his staff will also work diligently to clean up early-season rust and sloppiness and to minimize turnovers in the hopes of avoiding drama every Friday night.

In week zero, the Wildcats narrowly escaped with a 42-38 victory over their visitors from Brentwood.

They outscored the Eagles 28-26 in the second half.

And it took the boys in green 660 yards of total offense to open the season 1-0.

Sophomore quarterback Jesse Saucedo put up big numbers.

He completed 26-of-34 pass attempts for 485 yards and five TDs.

Saucedo struggled at times.

His four picks allowed Brentwood to stick around, but it’s something Saucedo will certainly improve upon going forward.

Looking back at his freshman campaign, Saucedo threw just five interceptions in 10 games.

The Wildcats had six running backs that combined to gain 175 yards on 22 carries, including 25 yards on nine carries for Saucedo.

Dominic Lino led MHS with 84 yards on just three carries.

Byron Bell gained 22 yards on two touches.

Lucas Martinez carried the ball twice for 19 yards.

Dashawn Sieber had the only rushing TD for Monrovia, gaining 12 yards on four carries.

Troy Grise and Byron Bell had monster games for the Monrovia receiving corps.

Grise caught nine passes for 167 yards and two TDs.

Bell totaled seven receptions for 148 yards and two scores.

Sieber hauled in five passes for 68 yards.

Evan Rickets totaled 75 yards on four receptions, including one TD.

Lucas Martinez caught one pass for 40 yards.

Up next: The Wildcats travel to Eagle Rock on Thursday night at 7.

The Eagles dropped a 59-56 shootout at Kennedy in their week-zero contest.
