How good was Covina junior Gatsbee Gumban in the Colts 49-35 season opening victory over La Puente?
He carried the ball 28 times for 340 yards at Covina District Field.
That included first-half TD runs of 6, 28, 71 and 58 yards.
Through week zero, Gatsbee is now just 199 yards from surpassing the 539 rushing yards he totaled in 11 games last season.
And Gumban is just two TDs shy of matching his total from a year ago.
Gumban’s four TDs (in order) tied the game at 7-7, gave CHS a 21-7 lead, and his TD runs of 71 and 58 yards allowed the Colts to take a 42-28 lead into the break.
With the 2025 graduation of Jake Duronslet and Kwame Parrish this past spring, expect Gumban to get the Lion’s share of the carries.
Gatsbee has the tools to give opposing teams and their coaches massive headaches because of his versatility.
In 2024, Gumban caught eight passes for 151 yards and one TD.
Up next: The Colts travel to Baldwin Park next Thursday at 7.
