Bonita and Muir met up Friday night in a week-zero contest that will benefit both programs going forward.

However, in the season opener, it was the Mustangs that came up with the W.

Trailing 17-14 with 37 seconds to play at the Muir 7, the Bearcats decided to take the aggressive approach, and they opted to go for the win on 4th-and-goal instead of tying the game with a short field goal attempt and taking their chances in overtime.

Part of the reason being that BHS lost their quarterback Travis Lippert a couple plays earlier in what appeared to be an ankle injury, and they didn’t want to put Cade Burbidge in an overtime scenario in his high school debut off the bench in the game’s waning moments.

A few plays after Joseph Lara saw what would have been his third TD of the game called back for holding, the Muir defense pressured Burbidge and Jason Brown ended the threat with a sack.

The Mustangs held a capable Bonita offense to less than 200 yards.

Joseph Lara scored on a 30-yard punt return midway through the first quarter to give the Bearcats a 7-0 lead.

And his 8-yard TD run late in the third got Bonita to within 17-14 of MHS.

However, the Mustangs D survived a late Bearcats’ drive to claim victory.

Muir got even in the second quarter when Alijah Parker scored on a 2-yard TD run.

MHS took their first lead when Drew Long caught a 30-yard TD pass from Trey Gamble.

Jacob Hernandez booted a 24-yard field goal with 8:29 to play to extend the Mustangs advantage to 17-7, and those three points turned out to be the game winning points.

Lara led the Bonita offense with 80 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Gamble ran the Muir offense and completed 21-of-30 for 204 yards and one score.

Up next: The Bearcats host Diamond Ranch on Friday at 7.

The Mustangs have a week-one bye, and they’ll travel to Charter Oak on September 5th at 7.
