Softball:
This past Friday morning, Rio Hondo Prep fell, 4-1, in the championship game of the Division 6 playoffs to University High School.
Fast forward to Tuesday, and after a one-hour rain delay, the Kares secured a convincing 9-3 victory over Taft in the first round of the CIF State Division 4 playoffs.
Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the third inning, RHP scored six times to pull away.
Allie Scott went the distance, allowing three runs on seven hits to earn the win.
Scott issued three walks and registered eight strikeouts.
Adriana Garcia went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs.
Chiara Cioffi walked, singled and scored.
Alexandra Chase went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Jordy Aardahl singled and scored.
Maya Gunderson walked and scored.
Cioffi went all six for Taft, and she was responsible for nine runs on nine hits.
Cioffi walked a pair and fanned a trio of RHP batters.
Bella Fairley hit a three-run home run.
Ryen Covey went 3-for-3 with two runs and a pair of RBIs.
Tara Riley singled, scored three runs and a hit a solo HR.
Madison Burl had an RBI double and scored.
Evonny Ortega went 1-for-3 with a run and one RBI.
Janna Taflinger drove in a run on a double.
Scott walked and scored.
Up next: The Kares will make the 173-mile drive to Santa Maria on Thursday to battle Pioneer Valley at 4.
The top-seeded Panthers (20-12) had a first-round bye, and their last game was a 12-6 loss to Liberty on May 30th.
