Baseball:
Marshall fell in one of the most painful ways possible in Saturday’s CIF-SS Division 6 final at Cal State Fullerton.
The Eagles led Estancia 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, but Caleb Thatcher had exited the game with two outs in the sixth after reaching the 110-pitch count.
Michael Gerst came on and got the final out in the sixth.
Gerst returned for the seventh and he surrendered a single, a walk and another single to load the bases with no outs.
Nate Callaway came on and Jake Humphreys hit a line shot to right that went for a double, and it got by the Marshall right fielder.
That allowed all three runs to score for a walk-off 4-3 victory.
The Eagles defense let itself down, especially a valiant effort on the mound from Caleb Thatcher.
In some cases, multiple miscues cost Thatcher conservatively 20-25 extra pitches to get out of innings.
In fact, he worked his way out of at least two runners on second and third with one out scenarios, and he escaped multi-runner innings, and pitched well enough to win.
Thatcher went 5 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits.
The Marshall lefty issued four walks and registered 10 strikeouts.
Seventy-one of his 111 pitches were strikes.
Gerst was responsible for three runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk in 1/3 of an inning.
Miles Dodge went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the bottom of the second inning.
Jacob Ramirez singled and scored.
Sawyer Atkinson drew a pair of walks, singled and scored.
Nico Viramontes walked, singled and scored.
Humphreys had the game-winning double.
Carlos Hauser walked and scored.
Vaughn McCrea went 6 2/3 innings, and he surrendered three unearned runs on five hits and four walks.
But just like Thatcher, McCrea, exited stage right after surpassing 110 pitches.
It was 115 to be exact.
Lincoln Silva was credited with the win after getting the last out in the top of the seventh, which was followed by the Eagles’ three-run rally.
Callaway went 2-for-3 with a walk, run and an RBI double in the top of the first to give Marshall a 1-0 lead.
Ben Muro had a huge two-run single in the first to extend the Eagles advantage to 3-0.
Ryan Pandullo singled twice, and his pinch runner (Chris Romero) scored on Muro’s base hit.
Trevor Lain reached base on an error in the first and scored.
Thatcher drew a pair of walks and singled.
Congrats to Marshall on a great season and Coach Joe Federico on a terrific career.
MHS showed its true character after the game.
Seeing their right fielder in tears, four of five Marshall players jogged out to right field to hug and comfort their brother.
Up next: The Eagles declined the opportunity to play in approximately 10 days in the CIF State playoffs.
Both the winner and runner up and each division qualifies for state, but many turn it down.
