Baseball:
If Marshall leaves Cal State Fullerton with the CIF-SS Division 6 championship trophy on Saturday afternoon, there’s a high likelihood that its pitching staff will have led the way.
The Eagles (20-6-1) will meet up with Estancia (19-13) at 1.
In 17 of their 27 games in 2025, Marshall pitching has surrendered two runs or less.
As a staff, they boast a miniscule 1.22 team ERA.
Marshall has D-6 playoff victories over Leuzinger (6-0), Cerritos (6-4), Santa Fe (1-0) and Heritage Christian (4-3).
Of the seven runs charged to the Eagles, only three were earned runs.
It’s likely that Caleb Thatcher (5-1, 2 saves, 1.24 ERA, 16 walks & 92 strikeouts in 56 2/3 IP) will get the start.
But Nate Callaway (5-1, 1.11 ERA, 12 walks & 32 strikeouts in 25 1/3 IP) and Michael Gerst (4-1, 1.15 ERA, 26 walks & 77 strikeouts in 54 2/3 IP) will be rested and ready.
Estancia, also the Eagles, are led offensively by Sawyer Atkinson.
Atkinson is batting .418 with 38 hits, 21 runs and 25 RBIs.
He’s collected 13 doubles, three triples and one home run.
Nico Viramontes (.361, 30 hits, 20 runs, 22 RBIs & 4 doubles) and Sean Sweeney (.309, 25 hits, 16 runs, 17 RBIs, 8 doubles, 1 triple & 1 HR) have both been key in Estancia’s deep postseason run.
It looks as though Marshall will avoid EHS ace, Nico Viramontes.
Viramontes (7-0, 2.38 ERA, 30 walks & 31 strikeouts in 53 IP) went six innings in Tuesday’s 4-3 victory over Rancho Mirage.
He allowed just one earned run and struck out five.
Vaughn McCrea (3-5, 2.95 ERA, 26 walks & 43 strikeouts in 54 2/3 IP) will likely get the start.
McCrea went eight innings in Estancia’s 4-3 quarterfinal round victory over Rancho Mirage.
He allowed three unearned runs on eight hits, walked one and fanned a pair of RMHS batters.
Lincoln Silva (3-6, 4.06 ERA, 17 walks & 21 strikeouts in 48 1/3 IP) will be ready and rested for the Eagles.
Marshall’s offense has been led by Trevor Lain and Caleb Thatcher.
Lain is batting .390 with 30 hits, 18 runs and 21 RBIs.
He’s totaled 13 doubles, one triple and one home run.
Thatcher is batting at a .356 clip with 26 hits, 35 runs and 12 RBIs.
Thatcher’s tallied five doubles, three triple and three home runs.
Nate Callaway (.286, 22 hits, 21 runs, 21 RBIs, 4 doubles, 2 triples & 5 HRs), Adan Castro (.290, 20 hits, 13 runs, 14 RBIs & 7 doubles), Ryan Pandullo (.267, 20 hits, 10 runs, 18 RBIs, 4 doubles & 1 HR) and Ben Muro (.216, 16 hits, 14 runs, 13 RBIs & 7 doubles) have each contributed much to the Eagles’ success.
In team-by-team statistical comparison, Marshall (1.22) has a better than two run team ERA over Estancia (3.27).
They’ve seven less losses than EHS.
MHS (222) is also 105 spots above Estancia (327) in the most recent MaxPreps state poll.
EHS (.268) holds a 10-point edge in team batting average over Marshall (.258).
Estancia has a 29-17 advantage in playoffs runs scored, however, Marshall pitching (7) has surrendered eight less runs in their four postseason games.
This is the first title-game appearance for the boys from Pasadena since 2019.
Good luck, Marshall!
