College Baseball:

Mt. SAC still needs one win on Monday to secure its first state championship since 1965.

That’s still a hurdle the Mounties need to leap.

However, the boys from Walnut put themselves in a great position to do just that.

With a 9-3 victory over West Valley in Sunday’s winners’ bracket, MSAC can go home, rest up and face off against a depleted Vikings’ pitching staff on Monday morning.

West Valley blew out Cypress, 16-4, on Sunday night, and they’ll need to defeat the Mounties twice if they want to deny MSAC a state title.

The Mounties scored the game’s first seven runs before the Vikings scored in the top of the fifth inning.

Adrian Valdez got the loss after surrendering five runs (four earned) on six hits and two hit batters over three innings.

Valdez issued a pair of walks and fanned three.

Sage Romero was responsible for two runs on two hits and a pair of walks in one inning of work.

Ahmed Brown went three innings, allowing two runs on four hits, one walk and a pair of hit batters.

Landon White went 3-for-4 with a walk, run scored and his two-run HR in the bottom of the first gave Mt. SAC a 2-0 lead.

Bryan Bradshaw drew a pair of walks, singled and scored three times.

Ty Thomas walked, scored and had a pair of RBI doubles.

Tyler Stull went 1-for-4 with a walk, one run and a two-run single.

Diego Ortiz had a two-run single in the fourth to extend the Mounties lead to 7-0, and he scored once.

Noah Rodriguez singled twice and scored.

Terrell Jackson singled and scored.

Cole Nachreiner walked and singled and the Mounties catcher hit the ball hard in every at-bat.

Hudson Castillo went the first 4 2/3 innings, and he was charged with two runs on two hits and five walks.

Joey Peralta came on with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the fifth and he ended the threat with a strikeout.

Peralta earned the official win by going 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits.

Peralta didn’t issue a walk and registered three strikeouts.

Connor Spear walked and had an RBI single to get the Vikings on the board.

Kai Laxa singled and drew a bases loaded walk off Castillo.

Carmelo Rivera singled and scored.

Xander Sielken walked and scored.

Eric Altmark walked, doubled and scored.

Up next: The Mounties will face West Valley on Monday morning at 11.

Mt. SAC needs just one win on Monday to make program history.

Brendan Menchaca (10-1, 2.66 ERA, 14 walks & 53 strikeouts in 64 1/3 IP) will get the start.
