Baseball:

Glendora successfully used the pitching by committee in Friday’s 2-1 victory at Costa Mesa in the quarterfinal round of the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs.

Tanner Grable went three-plus innings, allowing one run on three hits.

Grable issued three walks and registered three strikeouts to earn the win.

Sebastian Lawrence entered the game in the bottom of the fourth with a runner on first and no outs.

Lawrence allowed one hit over three-plus innings, walked a pair, hit one batter and fanned three Mustangs.

Santiago Garza was handed the ball in the bottom of the seventh with the tying run on first and no outs.

Wylan Rottschafer had been hit by Lawrence to lead off the inning.

Aiden Comte sacrificed Rottschafer into scoring position with one out.

However, the GHS sophomore induced a fly ball off the bat of Will Clark to center that was deep enough to allow Rottschaffer to get within 90 feet of tying the game.

Garza had other ideas, as he got Grady Jackson looking to end the game in dramatic fashion.

Rottschafer’s two-out RBI double in the fourth pulled CMHS to within 2-1 of Glendora.

Comte finished 1-for-3.

Jake Shafer walked, singled and scored.

TJ Smith had one single for the Mustangs.

Troy Simmonds got the loss after allowing two unearned runs on six hits over four innings.

Simmons did not issue a walk, and he struck out three.

GHS scored both of its runs in the top of the second.

Tyler Olbert reached base on an error, Jackson Glaze singled, and Grable flew out to center.

Olbert and Glaze moved up to second and third base, respectively, on a passed ball.

And Mason Danison had the game’s biggest base hit.

Danison’s two-run single to center turned out to be the game winning runs.

Kai Zeits and Grable had two hits apiece.

John Seader singled for the Tartans.

Up next: The Tartans will host Temecula Valley on Tuesday at 3:15 with a spot in the D-3 title game at stake.

The Golden Bears (19-11) secure a 4-1 victory over Castaic in their quarterfinal round contest.
