Girls Athlete of the Week:
Imagine a senior year in which an athlete is hitting in the .160’s, and in the first playoff game, they’re 0-for-4, including a walk, being hit by pitch and striking out.
And then consider the dramatic roller coaster in watching your softball team surrender a 6-2 lead in the sixth inning when the opposition puts up four big runs to tie the game at 6-6.
That was exactly the case for Rio Hondo Prep’s Bella Fairley in Thursday’s CIF-SS Division 6 first round game against their visitors from Southlands Christian.
Fairley walked to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning, and she picked the absolute best time ever to hit her first home run of the season.
It was a two-run blast that secured an 8-6 victory.
Two days later, the girls from that little school in Arcadia thumped their hosts from St. Monica, 16-6, in a six-inning mercy-rule victory.
Fairley went 2-for-4 with a walk, RBI single and a two-run triple to earn the program a spot in next week’s quarterfinal round.
For the season, Fairley is batting an approximate .175 with eight hits, 17 runs, 11 RBIs, three doubles, a triple and one HR.
Up next: The Prep League’s co-champs will host Katella on Wednesday at 3:15.
The Knights (14-13) claimed a 7-4 victory over their visitors from Vazquez.
Bella Fairley’s Playoff Stats:
5/15: 1-for-4, walk, hit by pitch, three runs & 2-run HR
5/17: 2-for-4, run, triple & three RBIs
