It’s completely natural for an athlete of any sport or gender to fight off nerves in a first-round playoff game.
No one told that to Marshall senior Caleb Thatcher.
Thatcher faced one over the minimum and tossed a one-hit shutout in the Eagles 6-0 victory over Leuzinger in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 6 playoffs.
He got the first six batters, and then Zach Grant doubled to lead off the top of the third inning.
Thatcher brushed it off and retired the game’s final 15 batters.
He didn’t issue a walk and fanned 13.
At the plate, Thatcher walked, singled and scored a pair of runs.
Thatcher needed 86 pitches to finish what he started, and 62 of the 86 were strikes.
For the season, Thatcher is 3-1 with a 1.17 ERA.
He’s walked 11 and struck out 83 in 48 innings.
At the plate, he’s batting .348 with 23 hits, 29 runs, 11 RBIs, five doubles, three triples and two home runs.
