College Baseball:

La Verne scored three runs in the first inning, got one more in the seventh, and Matt DesMarets and Justin Ries made that stand up in a 4-3 victory over Redlands in the SCIAC Tournament opener.

The Leopards have already matched last year’s total of 32 wins, and that’s a program best since 1995.

Matt DesMarets went 6 2/3 innings, and he was charged with two runs (one earned) on four hits to earn the win.

DesMarets issued a pair of walks and registered four strikeouts.

Justin Ries earned the save, going 2 1/3 innings, and surrendering one run on two hits.

Ries didn’t give a free pass, and he fanned a pair of Redlands’ batters.

Rylan Morris singled, scored twice and hit a solo home run.

M Kirkland went 3-for-4 with a run and one RBI.

Jake Burgess walked and doubled to account for the other Bulldogs base hit.

Joe Godoy got the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings.

Godoy walked one and struck out seven ULV batters.

Tanner Currier provided 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, and he allowed one hit.

Nathan Perry went 3-for-3 with a walk, run, and his RBI double in the bottom of the seventh turned out to be the game winning run.

Logan Corthell doubled and scored.

Ryan Vosika singled and scored.

Nolan Anguiano went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Jason Givens had an RBI ground out.

Benny Vogel doubled and Aidan Salcedo singled.

Noah Garcia scored and had one RBI.

Up next: La Verne will battle Claremont-Mudd-Scripps today (Friday) at 3.

The Stags (31-10) edged Pomona Pitzer, 10-8, in their first-round contest.

Quotable:

U of La Verne pitcher, Matt DesMarets: “I felt like I did well today. I kept my team in the game the whole time, and I did what I could to win. There were moments in the game where it could have changed, but I held it down and stopped them. I felt like I did a good job of slowing myself down today and making in-game adjustments that were necessary. Justin was amazing today. He came in a spot with two guys on base and got the out to keep the lead. He pitched in two very high intense innings and slammed the door. He was in control out there of all his pitches, and he was composed. It was a very huge save he had today.”
