Glendora is getting used to female athletes making history.
Just nine weeks ago, Samantha Sachs became the Tartans first (boy or girl) state wrestling champion.
Sachs pinned No. 2 seeded Ruby Julien-Newsom of Torrey Pines in 64 seconds to claim the 130-pound CIF State individual championship inside the Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.
Fast forward to May 3rd, and Glendora not only secured a first CIF-SS STUNT championship in school history.
They will also go into the history books as the first CIF Southern Section Division 2 champions.
GHS got by Rosemead (20-0), Norco (20-6) and Villa Park (23-7) to earn a spot in yesterday’s semifinal and final round at Brea Olinda High School.
The Tartans defeated Vista Murrieta, 14-7, in the semifinal.
And they wrote their names into the record book with a 15-5 triumph over Portola of Irvine.
For many who don’t fully understand the way the sport works (like this writer), it’s broken into four periods.
Quarter 1 is partner stunts, followed by pyramids and tosses (2), jumps and tumbling (3) and the fourth period is a team routine with all three of those categories put together.
A program can earn up to four points apiece in the first three quarters, and then 12 points are up for grabs in the decisive fourth quarter.
Glendora coach Alexis Aguirre described the Tartans’ success this way: “Our strategy all season was to work together as a team. We can’t do this without the support of every single athlete. We have drilled every single routine to match the eight count sheets. We have reviewed film from every league game and pin-pointed our weak points.
I believe what sets us apart from a lot of our opponents is the family bond we have on the sidelines. We all do it for each other. This team would not be complete without all 21 athletes. No matter who is across from us on the mat or what the score board says, our athletes stay focused and truly keep their head in the game.”
Up next: GHS will be heading to State Championships in Fresno on Friday, May 9th.

Former SDHS assistant principal, & STUNT assigner, Rita Kear: “I think Glendora is a solid team from top to bottom. They have good coaching, athletic members and their routine is clean. They are very competitive and work together as a team. They obviously have trust in each other. Glendora also receives great support from its administration.”
