Baseball:
Five months after winning a second consecutive CIF-SS football championship, the same group of athletes secured Rio Hondo Prep’s first Prep League baseball title in more than 20 years.
The Kares officially clinched the Prep League crown on Friday thanks to a 5-1 victory at Providence.
The 15 wins is the most since 2019, when RHP went 18-7 in that CIF-SS title run.
Rio Hondo Prep’s lone league loss was a 4-1 setback on Tuesday against this same Providence team.
Flintridge Prep (6-2) finished just one-game back of the Kares, but RHP swept the Wolves (5-3 & 13-5) in their two-game series.
But back to Friday.
Rio Hondo Prep’s offense totaled just two hits, but six Providence errors cost the Pioneers all five runs.
And five separate Kares were hit by pitch.
Nathan Harwood went 5 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to earn the win, and he allowed just one hit.
Harwood issued one walk and registered three strikeouts.
Diego Householder got the start, and he was charged with one run on one hit and a pair of walks over 1 2/3 innings.
Adrian Contreras hit a solo HR in the bottom of the first inning, but that would be all the Pioneers’ offense could muster.
Roman Mastandrea had the other Providence base hit.
Kiran Kostecka was saddled with the loss after surrendering three unearned runs on two hits over four innings.
Kostecka walked two and struck out four RHP batters.
Easton Jara was hit by pitch, singled and scored.
Noah Penunuri was hit by pitch and scored.
Nate Curtis walked, was hit by pitch and scored two runs.
Elijah Gavia doubled and was plunked by a Providence pitcher.
Rocco Tardino pinch ran for Householder and scored.
Up next: RHP will wait until May 12th at 10 am to get its playoff opponent.
