College Baseball:
Chaffey College got off to a terrific start to the 3C2A playoffs.
The Panthers defeated their visitors from Surf City in game one of a best-of-three playoff series.
Chaffey claimed an 8-2 victory over Golden West, and they out-hit the Rustlers, 9-3.
It’s the program’s first playoff win since 2016.
Jackson Price went 6 1/3 innings to earn the win, allowing two runs on three hits.
Price issued six walks and registered eight strikeouts.
Connor Luetto got the save by providing 2 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings in relief.
Luetto didn’t give away a free pass and he struck out three.
JJ Robles doubled and scored.
Jonny Rodriguez had an RBI single in the top of the seventh.
Cole Belfanti walked and scored.
EJ Barnes drove in a run on a sac fly.
David Ladjevic got the loss after surrendering three runs on two hits over four innings of work.
Ladjevic issued six walks and registered six strikeouts.
The Panthers got to Wyatt Thomas for four runs on four hits and a pair of walks in 1 2/3 innings.
Jayden Sanchez drew a pair of walks, scored twice and hit a solo HR in the eighth from the leadoff spot.
Eric Valdivia drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the first inning, and he had a two-run single in the eighth.
Jaden St. Cyr walked twice, doubled and scored.
Ryder Young walked, singled and scored a pair of runs.
Jordan Daniels went 2-for-4 with a walk and a pair of RBI singles.
Ryan Melton drew two walks and scored.
AJ Hurtado singled and had an RBI double.
Dominick Torrez walked, singled and scored twice.
Derek Almeda had an RBI when he was hit by pitch with the bases loaded in the two-run first inning.
Up next: Joe O’Regan gets the ball on Saturday morning at 11:30 with the chance of securing the Panthers a spot in the Super Regionals.
If Chaffey were to lose, a third and deciding game will be played approximately 30 minutes after game two.
