Baseball:
Twenty-three days ago, South El Monte handed Marshall a 6-5 Mission Valley League home loss in eight innings.
Since then, neither program had dropped a league contest
On Wednesday afternoon, however, it was the Eagles from Marshall that outlasted their hosts, 8-5, in eight innings.
With two games remaining and identical 9-1 records, Marshall battles fifth-place Arroyo and winless El Monte, while South El Monte takes on third-place Rosemead and Arroyo.
But back to Wednesday’s thriller.
Marshall trailed 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning.
They’d score twice in the fifth and got one run in both the sixth and seventh innings to take a 5-4 lead.
To South El Monte’s credit, their scored in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
In the eighth, it was Adan Castro’s two-run double that broke a 5-5 tie.
The Eagles also scored on an SEM error to extend the lead to 8-5.
Caleb Thatcher went the first five innings, and he was charged with four unearned runs on four hits.
Thatcher issued one walk and registered nine strikeouts.
Nate Callaway got the win after going three innings and allowing one run on one hit and a walk.
Xavier Cordova singled twice and scored.
Christian Ortega and Ryan Leon singled and scored one run apiece.
Gabriel Canchola scored and had two RBIs.
Christian Ortega got the loss after surrendering four runs (three earned) on nine hits over six innings.
Ortega walked four and struck out five Marshall batters.
Matthew Medina was charged with four runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks over 1 1/3 innings.
Marshall out-hit South El Monte, 12-5.
Trevor Lain tripled three times, scored once and drove in a pair of runs.
Thatcher went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs.
Adan Castro singled twice, scored, and as mentioned, had the two-run double in the top of the eighth.
Callaway drew a pair of walks and scored.
Ben Muro walked and scored.
Nathan Mann and Nathaniel Aviles scored one run apiece.
George Jennings singled for the Eagles.
