Baseball:

Tomas Bilvado and his boys were not going to concede the Rio Hondo League title to Monrovia.

With a Thursday win at San Marino, the Wildcats would have all but wrapped up the RHL crown.

However, Bilvado went the distance in a 3-1 victory over their visitors.

Bilvado allowed just an unearned run on four hits.

He issued two walks and registered eight strikeouts.

Bilvado needed 101 pitches to finish what he started and 70 were strikes.

Kaleb Ellison doubled, while Sully Zinn, Josh Griffiths and Isaias Hernandez had one single apiece.

In the top of the seventh, Lucas Martinez reached base on an error, and he scored on Troy Grise’s RBI ground out.

Alex Meyers went 4 1/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits and three walks.

Maddox Morales was charged with two runs on two hits and a walk over 2/3 of an inning.

Both Meyers and Morales struck out one SMHS batter apiece.

Chase Mena singled, doubled and scored a pair of runs.

JT Lu-Morris had an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to give the Titans a 1-0 lead.

Parker Wilson walked and doubled in a run.

JJ Wilson had a double of his own.

Jamie Bercaw walked and scored.

Miles Morning had an RBI single in the fifth to extend the SMHS advantage to 2-0.

San Marino (6-2 in league) has a pair of two-game RHL series with fourth-place Temple City and last-place South Pasadena, while Monrovia (8-2) battles La Canada.

Quotable:

San Marino pitcher, Tomas Bilvado: “My mindset going in was to not to change anything, to do what I do, and trust that I’m good enough. I just take it pitch by pitch and compete with every pitch. If that means I go the whole game, so be it. But I do trust my bullpen. Today, my fast ball wasn’t great, but it spotted up when I needed it to. My curveball and slider were really good strike pitches to get ahead of their batters. Evan Bruno stepped up today by filling in at first base for a sick teammate, and JT Lu-Morris’ slash base hit to drive in our first run was really big for us. My catcher (Parker Wilson) is a comforting presence behind the plate. We always see eye to eye, and he almost always knows what I’m thinking. We do a good job of not looking ahead and take each game one at a time.”
