Joseph Moreno Tosses No-Hitter & Strikes Out 11 in South Hills’ 7-0 Hacienda League Victory at Los Altos

Baseball:

Twenty-six days ago, Joseph Moreno was one out from completing a no-hitter against one of the SGV’s power programs from San Dimas.

However, what many coaches believe is a bullsh** 110-pitch rule kept Moreno from getting the 21st out.

Justin Romero came in and closed out a combined no-hitter.

Fast forward to Wednesday, and Moreno was able to finish what he started.

The South Hills senior needed 105 pitches to no-hit their hosts from Los Altos.

Moreno and his Huskies claimed a 7-0 victory in Hacienda Heights.

Moreno issued four walks and registered 11 strikeouts.

He got eight LAHS batters on strikes at least once.

Carlos Montes was saddled with the loss after surrendering five runs (four earned) on six hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Montes walked three and struck out a trio of Huskies.

South Hills got a pair of runs on two hits and a walk off Sunny Gonzalez in 2 1/3 innings.

Diego Villarreal went 3-for-4 with three runs and a two-run HR.

Ayden Vieth walked, scored and had a two-run double.

Zack Escalera went 2-for-3 and scored.

Paxton Czubek doubled in a run in the first inning to give SHHS a 2-0 lead.

Wesley Manning had an RBI single in the three-run first inning.

Noah Esquival walked and scored.

Victor Merlos drove in a run on a sac fly.

Quotable:

South Hills coach, Darren Murphy: “You know, it’s pretty incredible to throw a no-hitter at this level and up, but it’s really tough to do when you don’t have your lights-out stuff, and Jo Jo would agree that he’s had better stuff. But that’s a testament to how good he is, and that he can throw a second no-hitter in less than a month.”

South Hill pitcher, Joseph Moreno: “I felt like all my pitches were working for me today. I was able to get them all down for strikes and there were a lot of swing-and-misses with all of them as well. As a team, I feel like we are starting to play well at the right time. Our bats are really starting to come alive as we saw today with Diego Villareal going 3-for-4 and hitting a home run in the seventh inning to seal the game. Paxton Czubek setting the tone in the first inning with a double off the wall, and it brought in two runs.  We had no errors as a team, so our defense has been spot-on. I also feel everything is clicking at the right time. We’re starting to understand the little things, and what we are as a team and how we need to play.”
