Baseball:
People may have been unsure as to how to gauge Rancho Cucamonga’s three-game sweep over Upland last week in their first Baseline League series.
However, there is no mistaking the value in the Cougars taking the first two games against arguably the deepest team in the league.
RCHS secured a 3-2 home win on Monday.
Fast forward two days, and the Cougars claimed a 3-1 victory at Los Osos in eight innings.
Jacob Peyton’s two-run HR with two outs in the top of the eighth off starter Jordan Mejico was the difference.
Mejico went 7 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits.
Mejico issued just one walk and registered nine strikeouts.
Zenen Pena got the final out in the eighth via strikeout.
Peyton finished 2-for-4 with a run and the two RBIs.
Jose Gomez singled and scored.
Aiden Bravo singled and scored.
Derek Lesiuk’s RBI single in the top of the second gave RCHS a 1-0 advantage.
Mason Sanchez went seven innings, and he was charged with one run on four hits.
Sanchez didn’t give a free pass, and he struck out five.
Justin Stansbury got the final three outs for the Cougars.
RCHS was four outs away from a shutout and with the bases loaded, Wyatt Mohler tied the game at 1-1 with a solo HR.
Justin Yeutter had half of Los Osos’ four hits.
Evan Jones singled once in three at-bats.
Both pitching staffs excelled.
RCHS and LOHS combined to walk one and strike out 15.
