Baseball:
Upland gave Damien a run for their money in Wednesday’s Baseline League showdown in La Verne.
With a 2-1 lead, the winless Highlanders (0-4) were four outs away from their first league conquest.
The Spartans, however, had other ideas, and they rallied for a pair of runs in the sixth inning to claim a 3-2 victory.
DHS is now 4-1 and they sit just one-game back of RCHS in second place.
Andrew Torres went 6 1/3 innings, and he was charged with two runs (one earned) on eight hits.
Torres didn’t issue a walk, and he registered five strikeouts to earn the win.
Ryan Wentworth got the final two outs, including one via strikeout to secure the save.
Darien Maung singled twice and scored.
Julian Zambrano’s two-run single gave UHS a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Elliot Cresap singled and scored.
Carson Kinnick, Tommy Lopez, Eli Cervantes and Dylan Trejo had one single apiece for the Highlanders.
Max Biddle went five innings, allowing one run on four hits.
Biddle walked a pair and struck out three DHS batters.
Joe Aguilar was charged with two runs on two hits and one walk over 2/3 of an inning.
Bobby Logue went 2-for-3, and he scored the first Damien run and tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Brady Bickham singled and scored.
Elius Kelly walked and singled.
Jackson Annigan laid down a safety squeeze in the fifth to score Logue and it pulled DHS to within 2-1.
To add insult to injury, Upland lost their fifth consecutive league game on a sixth-inning balk.
Nathan Moreno and Gino Tarzia had one single apiece.
Oliver Hines scored once for the Spartans.
