Baseball:
It hasn’t been the kind of start to the 2025 season that Matt Shupper had envisioned.
The Minutemen are just 5-6-1 so far, but MHS always kicks into a higher gear once Olympic League play gets underway.
And this year is no different.
Maranatha cruised to an 11-2 victory at Heritage Christian in the Olympic League opener.
MHS extends its league win streak to eight games dating back to last year.
The last time Maranatha was unable to secure an Olympic League title (2017), the Maranatha seniors were just 10 years old.
Since 2018, MHS is 70-4 in league play.
The Minutemen took a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning, and they never trailed.
Zach Strickland went five innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits.
Strickland didn’t issue a walk and registered 11 strikeouts.
Bradley Loiacono went one inning, and he surrendered an unearned run on one hit.
He didn’t walk anyone and got all three of his outs via strikeout.
Moses Llamas got the final three outs without any damage.
Edin Nailin singled and scored.
Nick Aguilar doubled, and Crosby Hirtensteiner singled to account for the rest of the HCHS offense.
Cullen Hirtensteiner got the loss after allowing nine runs (two earned) on six hits over 3 1/3 innings.
He issued four walks and struck out five MHS batters.
Josh Proctor went 2-for-5 with a run and five RBIs.
Proctor had an RBI ground out, an RBI double and a three-run HR.
Trevor Rivas went 1-for-4 with a double, RBI and three runs.
Gabe Barragan doubled and scored.
Will Suslow went 2-for-2 with a walk, two doubles, three runs and an RBI.
Strickland helped his own cause with two walks and a run.
Matthew Kurkdjian walked, singled and scored.
Yahir Treto singled and scored.
Lukus Perez drove in a run on a sac fly.
Up next: MHS will host Rancho Cucamonga (9-2) today (Wednesday) at 4.
