Baseball:

Two of the SGV area’s perennial powers met up for the first time in Hacienda League play.

And South Hills was not a very polite host.

The Huskies dominated San Dimas, 7-0, on Friday afternoon.

SHHS pitching tossed a no-hitter, and they knocked the Saints starter out before he was able to record an out.

Joseph Moreno went 6 2/3 innings of no-hit baseball.

Moreno walked three and struck out nine SDHS batters.

The only thing that stood between Moreno and history was the 110-pitch rule.

Justin Romero needed seven pitches to get the final out.

Moreno got seven of the Saints starting nine on strikes at least once.

Josh Calcanas was charged with five runs on five hits and two walks before being pulled.

Joseph Layva went five innings for SDHS, and he surrendered a pair of unearned runs on two hits.

Layva walked one and fanned three SHHS batters.

James Rocha provided a hitless and scoreless inning of relief, including one strikeout.

Diego Villarreal went 2-for-4 with a double, run and one RBI.

Gabriel Guerrero walked, doubled and scored.

Ayden Vieth singled and scored a pair of runs.

Carson Baker walked with the bases loaded, drove in another run on a sac fly and scored.

Zack Escalera’s RBI single in the bottom of the first inning gave SHHS a 3-0 lead.

Wesley Manning followed Escalera with an RBI single of his own.

Paxton Czubek walked and scored.

Victor Merlos singled and Robert Brown scored.

Up next: The Huskies fly to Tennessee on Sunday to compete in a tournament.

The Saints will host Los Altos on Wednesday at 3:30.

South Hills and San Dimas will meet again on April 23rd and 25th.

Quotable:

South Hills coach, Darren Murphy: “Joseph had everything going well today. He has a big league changeup. When he has it going like he did today, he’s sort of a man amongst boys. He’s been dominant in every performance. He’s off to a great start to his senior year. We were thrilled to get this win. We told the kids all week that this was the biggest game of the season.”
