Wrestling:
Just yesterday, 25 competitors (14 girls & 11 boys) from 210 Prep Sports programs began their quest to win a CIF State Championship inside the Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.
Fast forward one day, and that list has been narrowed to three.
All three are girls and two of the three are No. 1 seeds.
Glendora’s Samantha Sachs is two wins from a 130-pound state title.
Sachs dispatched of Piper Pike (St. Helena) in 73 seconds to earn her third pin in as many matches.
Northview’s Delarie Juarez earned her spot in the 145-pound semifinal.
Juarez defeated No. 8 Kelly Meehan (Tokay), 4-0.
And then came the big surprise.
Unseeded San Dimas’ Charlene Smith pinned her way to the heavyweight semifinal.
Smith stuck No. 2 seeded Noe Sedano (Justin Garza) at 5:46.
In tears, Smith would not let go of an embrace by her coach, Jesse Jaime, before leaving mat 3 and heading. upstairs.
As of 4 pm on Friday, the Northview girls sit at No. 1 in team points.
