Boys Wrestling:
After day of the CIF State Championships in Bakersfield, only two of the 11 competitors from 210 Prep Sports programs remain in the championship bracket.
Northview’s Elijah Butler and Etiwanda’s Jacob Bell are a first (quarterfinal round) win on Friday from an automatic podium spot.
Butler (106 pounds) pinned San Pedro’s Lorenzo Reyes at 1:33 of their first-round bout.
The Northview sophomore edged Reedley’s Aiden Talavera, 13-9, to earn a spot in tomorrow’s championship quarterfinal showdown with No. 1 seeded Samuel Sanchez of Esperanza.
Bell (150) was awarded a first-round forfeit from Skyline’s Woodrow Stritzel.
And Bell defeated Bullard’s Roman Gutierrez, 7-1, to advance to Friday’s afternoon’s quarterfinal.
Bell is set to battle the No. 2 seed, Ivan Arias of Buchanan.
Bonita’s Tristan Fernandez (150) earned 15-6 and 8-0 victories over Kaleb Cadena (Bakersfield) and Brock Buak (Union Mine), in his first two matches.
In his third match, Fernandez led Millikan’s Chris Anguiano, but the Bearcats senior was pinned at 5:06.
Northview’s Michael Vassalle won his first two matches as well.
Vassalle def Jacob Brooke (Chic0, 8-0), and he followed that with an 11-1 major decision over Brawley’s Matthew Gutierrez.
In a third bout on Thursday. Pitman’s Carter Vannest, the 190-pound three seed, earned a 20-4 tech fall over the Vikings’ senior.
